CHAPTER 14

“We hope you’ll strongly consider it.”

Um, of course. But Bree managed to find a few more seconds of poised professionalism in herself, and she instead said, “I will. Can I take a few weeks to decide?”

Because while it was gratifying to be offered your dream job, while she knew she had to leave New York, Bree was still a cautious person. There were logistics to consider, plans to make, and disasters to catalog and guard against. Intellectually, she knew what she should do, but she needed to prepare her heart for the leap.

Sam, on the other hand, would’ve already jumped in with both feet, never pausing to digest the possibilities or to deal with the details or to make a backup plan to protect himself. Thinking about him hurt. Hurt even more than normal.

“Take all the time you need.”

The people at Hutchinson-Baker certainly had approached everything about the interviews and offer with a single-minded determination that made Bree feel like the most competent person in the world, because they wanted her to join their firm so badly. She could get used to feeling like that.

“We’d like you to start after the first of the year.”

That was seven weeks and a few days away. She could have one last Thanksgiving and Christmas in New York before moving halfway across the country.

“I’ll get back to you soon.” She hung up and set her phone on her desk.

It had been four days since the museum. Four days since Salem had suggested Sam might love Bree, and since that moment in the employees’ hallway when it had seemed as if everything Bree had kept to herself for decades had been about to spill out.

Bree hadn’t talked to Sam since then, though she was supposed to go to his mini Videon set in a few days. She ought to tell him about Michigan. She ought to tell him everything.

Or she ought to pull back totally. Begin the slow and likely painful process of ripping him out of her life.

“Hey, you’re still around!” Megan was leaning out of her office with a set of architectural plans in one hand. “I thought you left hours ago.”

Most of the rest of the office had. Bree and Megan were the only ones still there.

“I had to wrap up some things—and I had a call.”

Megan stared hard at Bree for a second. “Did Hutchinson-Baker make you an offer?”

“Yes.”

“Huzzah!” Megan thrust the plans into the air. In addition to Severance, she also loved The Great, and it wasn’t only because she resembled Elle Fanning. She, too, would be good at planning a coup. “Congratulations! I’m not surprised, but I am delighted. Except, oh shit, we’re going to need an army to replace you.”

“Not an army.” Bree had already made notes for a memo about her duties and begun drafting some job ads. It was good to think ahead, right?

Megan was going to need one senior person and one junior person to replace Bree. It should’ve been scary, knowing that Bree had essentially been doing the work of two people, but instead, it was validating.
